RESIDENTS SAY BIRTH DEFECTS WERE CAUSED BY TOXIC LANDFILL

State and federal health investigators are trying to determine why an alarming number of children in a small California town are born with severe birth defects. Residents of Kettleman City believe that many of the birth defects are caused by contaminants from agricultural waste and from the nearly 400 tons of hazardous substances that are dumped at the town’s local landfill. In the past, the facility’s owner, Waste Management Inc., has been fined more than $2 million for failing properly monitor and handle toxic materials at the landfill.
