MICHIGAN RESIDENTS AT RISK FOR ID THEFT

Michigan Secretary of State officials are sending out breach notification letters to customers who could be at risk of identity theft. State officials believe an identity thief took driver’s license applications and state ID applications from at least two branches, including two Macomb County offices.

The thefts occurred at the Southwest Macomb PLUS Office on Dequindre Road in Warren and the North Macomb PLUS Office on Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township.  Michigan officials believe at least 13,966 documents were stolen dating back to 2009. Disturbingly, these documents containing personal identifying information (PII) were kept in a secure place of the branch that is not open to the public. The victims are at a risk for identity theft as a result of the data loss.
