EASTERN ILLINOIS STUDENT DATA STOLEN

Investigators are looking into the breach of a computer security system at Eastern Illinois University.  The extent of the breach is undetermined, but university officials believe the breach may affect as many as 9,000.  Eastern Illinois University has mailed approximately 9,000 letters to former, prospective and current undergraduate students and the university has created a web page for additional information about the admissions computer server breach.

According to Eastern Illinois, “a machine was compromised by a virus so we don’t believe it was a targeted attack against the university.”  Well, that makes me feel better!

An investigation into a breach of computer security at Eastern Illinois
University has not yet determined if personal data was stolen from a list
of about 9,000 people, a university official said Friday.

Eastern has mailed letters to 9,000 former, prospective and current
undergraduate students regarding the breach of files that contain personal
information. The university has created a Web page with information about
the breach of the admissions computer server and answers to frequently
asked questions. It may be viewed at http://www.eiu.edu/notice.

assistant director of information security for Eastern Information
Technology Services.
