Dollar Tree Data Breach

According to a video on WRDW.com, Dollar Tree’s credit card system has been hacked by an unknown hacker.  Dollar Tree employees have publicly announced that a hacker has hacked into Dollar Tree’s computers and exposed customer’s credit card information.

While Dollar Tree is stating that it has no information about customer’s credit card information used from this data breach, about three years ago, hundreds of Dollar Tree customers in California and Oregon had their PINs stolen and thousands of dollars was subsequently withdrawn from ATMs.

Consumers that shop at Dollar Tree should regularly check their credit reports from all three credit reporting agencies.  Unfortunately, most courts are reluctant to recognize fear of identity theft, so consumers may or may not have a cause of action for actual damages.  Nonetheless, Georgia does have some consumer friendly statutory protections for victims of identity theft.
