Debt collector American Corrective Counseling Services will pay $2.55 million to settle allegations that it misled thousands of Pennsylvania residents into paying fees to avoid prosecution for bounced checks. According to the lawsuit, the company purported to be with various Pennsylvania district attorneys’ offices and told plaintiffs that they would not be prosecuted if they paid fees and attended a financial responsibility class. The settlement covers about 15,000 Pennsylvania residents taken in the alleged scam. Dan Nephin, San Francisco Chronicle 11/03/2009 |
