CREDIT REPORT SCAM EXPOSED
Don’t be fooled by websites that claim to offer free credit reports. There is only ONE free annual credit report website annualcreditreport.com. We recently discovered a sham free credit website annualcreditreport.info. See the difference?
It’s the domain name. .Info versus .com. This is a simple trick used by legitimate and not-so-legitimate companies to make users believe they are on the official website. The real website, annualcreditreport.com, is a creation of the 2003 amendments to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), called the fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA).
However, we recommend consumers request their free annual credit report (technically it’s called a free annual disclosure) from the centralized source. Central Source is a joint venture created to comply with FACTA by Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. Under federal law, you have a right to request a free credit report under many different circumstances, including one in a 12 month time period. You may request your report from one, two or all three of the nationwide consumer reporting agencies.
Consumers should stay away from online requests and should request their free reports by mail at:
Annual Credit Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
Or, by telephone at:
Consumers can complain directly to Central Source about their experience when requesting a free credit report.
