CHILDREN AT RISK FOR ID THEFT

Identity theft is a growing problem for American consumers, especially children.  In fact, a recent study on identity theft indicates children are at a greater risk for having their identities stolen.  How much greater? Children are 50 times greater than adults to be victims of identity theft!

Theft of children’s personal identifying information often goes undetected for years, according to Ilana Greene at Forbes Magazine.  Children may be at a greater risk because of the prevalence of the use of their Social Security number as an identifier in schools, hospitals and at the doctor’s office.   As soon as the child is assigned a Social Security number, usually at birth, they may be at risk for identity theft.

Children may not detect the identity theft until they apply for their first credit account or job – as more and more employers are performing background checks, including reviewing potential employees’ credit reports.

Millions of identities are stolen every year.   Anne Wallace, executive director of the Identity Theft Assistance Centre, told Ilana Greene, “Obviously, these are very vulnerable victims.”
