BP SETTLES LAWSUIT OVER OIL BURNS

Oil giant British Petroleum has agreed to a settlement with a group of environmentalists that accused the company of possibly killing endangered sea turtles during controlled burns of oil on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. Ship captains and biologists have said they have rescued sea turtles from the oil very near “burn boxes where BP’s crews corral and ignite oil on the surface.”

Under terms of the settlement agreed to last Friday, “no controlled burns would take place until at least Tuesday, due to weather conditions; and that the Coast Guard and BP will tell the groups Tuesday whether they can have observers on every burn boat to ensure that turtles are identified and removed from the burn sites before burns begin.”
