TROY MEDICAL CENTER PATIENTS’ AT RISK FOR ID THEFT

Troy Regional Medical Center is notifying hundreds of patients about a recent data breach.  According to Stacy Graning at the Troy Messenger, patients’ personal identifying information (names, date of birth, address and Social Security number) was stolen from Troy Regional Medical Center earlier this year.

Authorities are investigating the data theft and believe the criminal activity may be related to other identity theft crimes committed elsewhere in Alabama and Georgia.  The patients at risk for identity theft have dates of birth between the years 1988 and 1992.

Troy Medical Center’s administrator said she was alerted to the identity theft by law enforcement officers as early as may May, 2011, but did not give patients notice of the incident because it was under investigation.   The hospital is re-evaluating its data security procedures and protocols to better protect patients personal identifying information.

The identity thieves have begun to use the patients’ information in attempts to file tax returns.  Troy Medical Regional Medical Center is offering patients affected by the breach with one year of free credit monitoring.
