MICHAELS DATA BREACH

The recent Michaels data breach is much larger than originally estimated.  The data breach occurred when hackers penetrated Michaels point of sale PIN pads.  When Michaels customers keyed in their personal identification number (PIN) for debit card transactions the data was sent to hackers.  Michaels customers in the Chicago area became aware of the scam when they noticed unauthorized charges on their bank accounts.

Now, Michaels has issued a statement that almost nearly 90 other stores in as many as 20 states from coast to coast were affected by the data breach.  The Secret Service is investigating the data breach.  Investigators believe Michaels PIN pads were replaced by hackers with skimmers that skim and collect card data from users.  In response, Michaels has removed some 7,200 PIN pads from most of its U.S. stores and expects replacements to be completed soon.
