Fishermen and Environmentalist File Lawsuit Against US Dept of Interior

A group of fishermen and environmentalists along the Gulf of Mexico coast have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service over lax regulations that allegedly contributed to the April 20 explosion and oil spill. The lawsuit claims that the MMS issued notices to British Petroleum saying they did not have to follow blowout and oil spill rules. The lawsuit seeks to invalidate the agency’s practice of sending notices to oil companies informing them they don’t have to comply with the rules and to order a review of offshore drilling plans that do not comply with existing rules.
