CLASS ACTION FILED AGINST DROPBOX.COM – BUG UNLOCKS 25 MILLION USERS’ ACCOUNTS
Dropbox has been named in a class action lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California. Dropbox provides to its customers with data storage via the cloud and claims to have as many as 25 millions users.
The named class action representative, Cristina Wong, alleges Dropbox claims superior online security to its competitors and encourages its customers to store personal identifying information and confidential business information on its cloud servers.
The class representative also alleges Dropbox had a bug which allowed its users to log in into other users’ accounts, but the company did not give its users a direct breach notification. Here is the quote from Dropbox’s blog posting on June 20, 2011:
“This should never have happened. We are scrutinizing our controls and we will be implementing additional safeguards to prevent this from happening again.”
